Over the past year, I have been writing new electronic bass music rooted in Thai classical โขน “Khon Dance” for choreographer พิเชษฐ กลั่นชื่น Pichet Klunhun. The performance entitled สุบินนิมิต Cyber Subin premiered during March 8-10 as part of the Taiwan International Arts Festival 2024.

The performance was particularly moving for me, because about 15 years ago, my mom took me to watch one of Pichet’s first works in Thailand. I remember being struck by the beauty and mastery of his movements, even as a young kid. Now, here I am 15 years later, writing music for him! What a coming round of a full circle :D In addition to newly composed tracks made for this performance, the show also featured my winning song for the AI Song Contest 2022 อสุระเทวะชุมนุม “Enter Demons and Gods” as the opening and finale of the performance.

Cyber Subin is a re-imagination of Thai classical dance through the lens of Cybernetics, and was a collaboration with MIT Media Lab’s Pat Pataranutaporn and many other talented Thai creative technologists like Phoomaparin Mano. At the time of writing, I am currently putting together a whole series of content and behind-the-scenes covering the whole year of work so stay tuned! For now, check out these images from the event and a live set featuring some of my favorite tunes I wrote for the show. What an incredible experience to be part of this production! Thanks to the National Theatre and Concert Hall of Taiwan for giving us the opportunity to bring this piece into the world!
